Nightmares Arent Always Fearsome As he slowly opened the door, he saw Nightmare swatting a deck of cards around. My house. My card house I spent all afternoon building! Nightmares young pet screeched. Im sure I locked the door to this room when I left...Im just positive. After the male child calmed down a bit he just shook his head, puzzled that the door was still closed when he got there and yet, there was Nightmare sitting in the middle of the remains of his once magnificent creation. The black and white cat he called Nightmare continued playing with the cards as if his human had not barged in and bellowed at the top of his lungs. His clever black paws moved the cards around skillfully. In fact, to the boy, it was almost as if Nightmare wasnt even touching them at all. The small dark cat ignored his pet as he concentrated on the thin pieces of cardboard. They had always fascinated him ever since he saw a human do a trick with them when he was younger. He watched as a magician made them disappear and then reappear out of thin air. Of course, he could smell that they were hidden and not really gone but playing tricks with cards still intrigued him. He practiced with cards, playing and getting a feel for them. Eventually, he figured out how to make them disappear...and reappear, though not always in an appropriate place. He smiled at the memory of one of the grown-ups finding one floating in his soup. Nightmare thought that cards were one of the greatest things in the universe. Then, his pet did something even more amazing with the cards: he made a house out of them. Nightmare came upon the house purely by accident. He was, as usual, never where he was supposed to be and ended up in the den. The door and windows were closed. Probably so no breezes could blow the card building down, he thought later. He couldnt miss the distinctive smell of a deck of cards on the table, but what he saw defied his imagination. Warily he circled the table. After rounding the table a few times he decided he could better inspect the cards if he were on the table itself. "Should I teleport or leap? he thought. He shrugged slightly and leapt lightly onto the table top. Actually, he didnt leap so much as jump and slow his decent so as not to disturb the cards. Instinctively, he knew that any violent movement would topple the creation. Whiskers perked forward, he examined the house for any structural weaknesses. On the whole, his clever young human had constructed a wonderful five story card house that was as sturdy as any card construction could be. Unfortunately, it was no match for the cat who could pick any card from the pack. Nightmare simply extended one of his golden claws and pulled away the key support card. The creations of man are not infallible. That was about the time his pet came in. He was just starting to collect the cards, making every effort to look like he was playing. As he started to shuffle the cards together... in order, by value, lowest to highest... his human shook his head once more and began to gather up the remaining cards. It was only after thirty seconds that he realized he was holding mostly face cards. Then the baffled child saw the pack of neatly stacked cards in the spot the mysterious black tomcat was just at a moment before. Now how did Nightmare do that? Wondering about the cards, the closed door, and now missing cat, the young boy continued cleaning up. We should change his name to Black Magic. Well, that was amusing, the magical cat thought as he carefully licked his paws clean. He paid special attention to his golden claws. And teleporting is definitely getting easier. He remembered a time when he teleported into the middle of a Pollicle dogfight instead of away from it. He wanted to avoid the Pollicles when he came upon them in an alley. They were much bigger than his young self. Unfortunately, he panicked. Thankfully, he found out he could throw lighting that same night. But that was when I was still a very young kitten and since then Ive honed my skills quite nicely. If only I were as good at expressing my feelings to a certain female, he sighed as he gazed at the stars. | |
