Rex is Not a Dog!
By Roalee

There was nothing that caused the lean dark colored tomcat more amusement than making his humans crazy.

"If I could get my hands on him, I would get him neutered. That would make him behave,” his male pet threatened, not for the first time. He opened the door again...the fifth time in the span of thirty minutes.

His human female didn’t even look up as she concentrated on her sewing. She spoke very clearly, “Install a cat flap, dear.”

Her hands quickened as she knew what was coming next. She noticed how the dark cat’s back legs bunched and his mane fluffed out and wham...he was in her lap. ‘How could I resist?’ he thought.

“You just had to call attention to yourself by telling me something I will never do, didn’t you?” her husband said annoyed. “There is no way about it, that disrespectful cat is out of hand.”

“Oh Rex, not again!” his wife exclaimed with a loud sigh. She held her needle away from Rex’s clever leopard spotted paws.

“I still think we should have gotten a dog. They can be taught to be obedient. Besides, Rex is a dog’s name.”

Rex’s male pet glowered at the bundle of furry muscle that just began to stretch and knead his paws on his wife’s lap. She allowed his muddied paws to soil the shirt she was working on.

“Dear, you know very well that Rex means king. And our little lion wouldn’t be much of a king of beasts if he was fixed.”

Stroking the tomcat’s speckled mane caused him to purr loudly and extend his claws. Unfortunately, he also put holes in the shirt and accidentally pricked his pet’s legs.

“Ow, sweetie, stop that.”

She put her needle away and began to stand up slowly.

“Now, Rex, if you don’t get off now, I just might have to cuddle and give you a squeeze. I know how...,” Rex then jumped down and ran out of the room. “...you don’t like it,” she continued. She smiled and shook her head at her glaring husband.

“He knows what his name means and acts accordingly.”

‘Yes, I do,’ the maned cat thought as he groomed himself. He especially took care to clean the mud from between his toes. ‘At least I got most of the mud off on that shirt.’

He grimaced slightly at the mud on his tongue. He also thought that his pets were well trained. Sometimes he worried. His male pet seemed to forget who was in charge in the house.

‘He’s just less and less patient. Oh well,’ thought the kingly cat. ‘He will come ‘round.’
