Wonder Goes Exploring Part 1
By Roalee
Best read after Introducing Wonder

I am definitely my mother’s kitten. I inherited most of her good looks, her patience, her zest for life, and her love of adventure. My father gave me his green eyes, his hot temper, and a small barely noticeable dollop of white on the underside of my belly. My mother’s pets were dismayed to see that their purebred Bombay queen had given birth to a multicolored kindle. Even so, they loved my mother and her kittens a lot.

There are four of us. My sisters, Marjorama and Saradala, my brother, Rotaregirfer, and me, Lahootspala. Of all of them, I am the only one who looks like mother. Rotaregirfer is white like father, but sadly, has blue eyes. Marjorama and Saradala are what humans call tortoiseshells, taking after who knows. Of course, having such an interesting family makes for interesting personalities. Maybe I’ll tell you more stories of them later.

It was decided by mother’s pets that only my brother Rota would stay with her. He is profoundly deaf, but he makes up for it by using his other senses to their fullest. He always knows when someone is sneaking up on him. The human family calls him White Blaze. When we were old enough, we three sisters were sent to two different homes. My two naughty sisters were given to a family with children and lots of room. Despite the recommendation of my mother’s pets, their new family took the both of them. Marjo was called Edina and Sara was Patsy. They were ecstatic. I chose to go with a couple without children. They gave me a lot of attention and freedom. The attention came from the female, the freedom from the male. Sometimes he gave me so much freedom, I was sure he hoped I would never come back. They called me Wonder. I know the woman thought I was a wonderful addition to their little family and the man... well... he thought it was a wonder that he got talked into allowing me into their lives. I didn’t matter to me. I love them and their eccentricities and they, well the lady at least, love me and mine.

My Uncle Spots was always around, checking up on me. He is my mother’s half brother; they have different mothers. He is older than mother and very protective. He was overjoyed when he learned that I would be moving just across the street from him. We are very close. When my ignorant pets left me and went on vacation, I, of course, missed the regular meals and human companionship, but I could live without them. I am no ordinary House Cat, after all. I was glad that they didn’t put me in a shelter or stick me with neighbors. Thankfully, I learned a few things from my father.

After the incident with Blue, Spots was a bit less protective of me. He saw that I could take care of myself. Even before my humans left I liked exploring. Because of my black collars, I was sometimes mistaken as a Stray. Now, with a new red collar and reputation, most of the cats in the area knew my name and description. I decided I needed to find out more about the cats around me.

“Spots, I know about the tribe of cats who hang out at The Shed. Macavity’s tribe is widely known. I’ve never been in an alley or ever met a Feral. The House Cats around here are few and never leave their houses if they don’t have to. I have to meet more cats. It will be lonely when you and your family move.”

When I said this, it gave my uncle pause. He had been in this neighborhood much longer than I had and knew more of the House Cats. He knew I needed more.

He thought long and hard before saying, “Some of the older House Cats are related to a tribe that hangs out at the Junkyard. All the cats your age that live here were born here and are not as adventurous. Seek out the Jellicles. They’re your kind of felines.”

“Thanks, Uncle! I knew I could count on you.” I licked him affectionately. “Where is the Junkyard, by the way?”

Spots cocked his multicolored head to the side as he thought some more. “You know, I’m not sure. Even though I hate to suggest it, but Blue would probably know.” He grimaced and shook his head. “I cannot believe I said that.”

I wiggled my ears and licked my whiskers nervously. I didn’t really give Blue any encouragement after he fought with my uncle. “I don’t think he’d want to see me after that one time,” I said at last.

“He does, actually,” my uncle said. He hesitated slightly before going on. “He came back the other night, wanting to square things away with me. He’s not such a bad tom after all. We... well, we both apologized to each other.”

“And he said he wanted to see me again?” I asked cautiously, trying to keep the excitement from my voice. Unfortunately, my expressive face and ears gave me away.

“Well... let’s see,” he paused. He knew how eager I was to know. I had to make myself perfectly still before he went on. “Okay, now that you’re calmed down... what was I going to tell you again? Oh yes, what Blue said,” he said quickly as my tail started to lash in annoyance.

“Basically, he said Great White wanted to see you and he mentioned hoping that you would go.”

I stood up quickly, checked to see if my black fur was immaculate and said, “I've got to go.”

“What? Now?” my uncle cried in disbelief. “Wait, Lahootspala, slow down.” He pounced on my tail and grabbed it. “Let me warn you about Great White,” he said as I stopped before my tail was yanked too hard.

“What about her? I know she’s the leader in The Shed. I also know that I got past her easily enough that one time.”

“And have you been back since?” Spots asked pointedly.

“No.” I didn’t want to tell him that it was because I was afraid to see Blue again.

“Hmm... well, Great White is really called The Great White Shark. Do you know anything about sharks?”

I nodded. I saw shows about them on the Animal Planet Channel all the time. Biggest fish in the world.

“Well, she’s aptly named. Do be careful.” He nuzzled me and licked my head before letting my tail go.

“I will Uncle Spots. Try not to worry too much.”

The streetlights had just started to flicker on as I headed down to The Shed. I wasn’t really thinking about much except what to say when I saw Blue. Sticking to the sidewalk, I briskly walked, keeping alert. When any cars rolled by, I shivered. I noticed that as I neared The Shed, more cats appeared. Ignoring them, I went on. By the time I reached the doorway of The Shed, I had a vanguard of six excited kittens. They whispered and giggled and bumped into each other when the ones in front stopped suddenly. They had caught sight of Great White and so had I. A tiny calico, one of my escorts, rolled against my foreleg. It froze as soon as it saw who it had bumped. I looked down at it in amusement and licked it reassuringly. Then I looked up at Great White as the kitten scrambled back to its friends.

“Well, you’ve come at last. Hungry again are we?” the large white queen sneered.

“Now that you mention it,” I said as I got up and headed towards the food, “I am.” This time the kind old lady left some fish and chicken out. As I ate, I heard gasps and hisses at my impudence. Great White stared at me hostilely. I took one more bite, lapped up some water, and stared right back at her. My eyes never left hers as I said very clearly, licking my lips and whiskers, “That was some good eatin’.”

The white queen’s yellow eyes widened and she laughed aloud. All the other cats were either looking at me shocked at what I said or looking at her shocked that she was laughing, except for the kittens. They were rolling around, laughing their tails off.

“Wonder, you’re just like your father,” the still chortling leader of The Shed said.

“What are you talking about? How would you know?”

“He used to say that very thing when he was younger.” She gazed at me merrily.
