Wonder Meets the Jellicles Part 1

"Halt! Who goes there!?"

"It is I, Plato!"

"Jeez, you've been gone for almost as long as Sillabub was. Hey, who are those two?"

"George, I'd like to introduce you to Blue and Wonder."

Blue and I nodded as our names were said. We looked up at the young tom who looked down on us from his post.

"Do you want me to announce your arrival?" he asked.

"No, thanks. I want to be able to catch Misto this time," Plato growled.

"Ha! Good luck, Plato. He's been practicing a lot since the Ball."

"Whatever. C'mon, I'll introduce you two to Munkustrap. He's the head tomcat of the tribe when the Jellicle Leader's not around." Plato walked into the Junkyard. Blue and I followed close behind. I was taking in the new surroundings so intently, that I bumped into Blue when he stopped.

"Wonder, wake up. We're here."

"Sorry, Blue. I just have an odd feeling about this place. So many cats. It's making my head ache."

"I don't see any cats around except Plato and that silver tabby that he's talking to. The smells around here are too strong to sense them that way. I don't get it, where are they?" he whispered. Blue craned his neck and caught sight of some eyes peering at him from various places around the piles of junk. The were unblinking. They were numerous. They were starting to make Blue nervous.

"Blue? Blue!? Snap out of it! What's wrong with you?" I asked, nudging him hard.

"We're surrounded," he said in a low voice.

"Relax. Jellicles are friendly, remember? Look, here comes Plato."

"Wonder, Blue, this is our illustrious leader-in-training, Munkustrap," Plato announced in a serious tone.

Giggles emanated from the shadows.

"Ha, ha, Plato. Quit the dramatics. Hello and welcome to The Junkyard." The silver striped tabby smiled warmly at Blue and I.

I smiled back. Blue merely stood taller. Munkustrap was a bit smaller than him, but not much. I nudged Blue warningly and he relaxed. Munkustrap looked at us quizzically. He glanced at Plato who shrugged and walked off.

"See you two later. I've got a small black tom to attend to," he said with determination.

"Bye, Plato, it was fun," I called after him. I turned my attention to the striking, silver tabby. He was quite handsome and just about my age. I hoped my fur was in place.

"It seems Plato won't be the one to show you around. Any volunteers?" Munkustrap asked, raising his voice slightly.

All the eyes disappeared, save four. From the shadows, two very elegant and synchronized, short hairs emerged. They were mostly black, with smatterings of brown, cream, and white.

"It looks like you've got some rivals in the elegance department."

"Shush, Blue," I whispered. "There's something about them..."

Munkustrap greeted the two identical cats with a touch of his paw. "Blue, Wonder, this is Coricopat and Tantomile. Coricopat, please show Blue around and Tantomile, please take Wonder."

The twin cats answered simultaneously, "We'd be delighted."

I looked over to Blue. He looked like he wanted to protest, but I gave him a warning look and he shut his mouth.

I smiled brilliantly at Munkustrap and held out my paw. He touched it lightly.

“It was nice meeting you, Munkustrap. C’mon, Tantomile, let’s go,” I said as I whirled to face the female twin.

Tantomile didn’t even blink or show any surprise at all. She smiled at me and nodded. I walked up to her and she rose slowly. Out of the corner of my eye I noticed Coricopat rise to his feet at the same time. We started in the opposite direction as the toms.
