The Journey Across the Pond Part 3
By Roalee

"Kitten, you simply can't wander off."

"Why, Mama?" asked the black kitten.

"You're too young. See, your brothers and sister stay by my side."

"They're scared," the kitten said disdainfully.

The mother cat sighed heavily. Her youngest was inquisitive, fearless, and very mobile. She knew she'd inherited the Jellicle Spirit that came from her Great-Great-Great-Great-Grandfather, Cat Morgan.

"Scatflipza, I want you to remember something that I will tell you. Repeat after me: My name is Scatflipza and I am related to Cat Morgan of the Jellicle Tribe. Okay?"

"My name is Scatflipza and I'm related to Cat Morgan of the Jellicle Tribe. What's it mean, Mama?"

The older cat licked and nuzzled her kitten lovingly and nudged her towards her sleeping litter mates.

"It means, one day, you'll be across the vast water and I'll never see you again."

"Okay, Mama. I'll be good and stay right here."

"For now, darling. For now."

"Frankie, wake up! We've been up in the air for hours and you haven't seen the view yet."

Marlee finally gave up waiting for the kitten to wake up on her own. She excitedly spoke through the door and urged the kitten to open her eyes. The kitten opened her green eyes slowly and yawned and stretched. She blinked at Marlee's excited face. Scatflipza grinned at her pet's enthusiasm. Sometimes Scatflipza was amazed at Marlee's behavior. Sometimes she would act in such a baffling manner, but that's what attracted her to the kitten in the first place. She flash-backed to the time she chose Marlee.

"How come there are more humans around, Mama?"

"Is something happening?"

"They're looking at us, Mom."

"I think it's exciting."

"You would, Scatty. C'mon guys, let's get her!"

When the strangers came in, they were greeted by the sight of a mother cat looking on as her litter wrestled each other playfully.

"They're not going to hurt each other, are they?" questioned a little girl.

"Nope. They're just playing. I helps them practice their fighting skills," a young woman answered as she squatted to stroke the mother cat.

"Hey there, Cleocatra. Well, today's the day. I hope your kittens are ready for it."

Scatflipza broke away from her siblings and padded over to her mother. She began to lick her black fur into place when the little girl squealed and tried to pick her up. The kitten tensed and hissed at the hand that reached towards her. The child hastily pulled her hand back.

"Scatflipza, be nice. She just wants to get to know you better," her mother scolded.

By this time, the rest of the kittens quit fighting and also groomed themselves.

"What did that woman mean about us being ready? Ready for what?"

"Scatflipza, call your litter mates over here," the queen said softly.

"Sure thing. Razzy, Jerry, Merci, get your tails over here!"

The humans and queen winced at the sounds coming from the small cat. They all shook their heads except the young woman who sat cross-legged, now, by the queen. Instead, she laughed again.

"You're such a big mouth, Scatty," exclaimed her sister as they crowded by their mother, keeping a safe distance from the human. Scatflipza was the only one who dared to get close to the human female who had casually lay on her stomach with her head on her crossed arms. The young woman’s eyes were closed, a content smile on her face. She sighed deeply.

“So Mama, what do you need us for?” Razkelly asked. He glanced at the humans warily.

“Listen, my kitlings. You’re four months old now. It’s about time you chose the humans you want to live with.”

“What!?” all the kittens shouted.

“I’ve taught you everything you need to know. You need to go out and experience more. Besides, my humans will send you to the pound if you aren’t adopted soon. Individually, I love you all with affection unspeakable, don’t ever forget that.”

The cats huddled together. Cleocatra nuzzled them to comfort them. The kittens bravely peered up at the humans that stared down at them. The little girl hesitantly reached towards Mercielle.

“Can I have the first choice Marlee? Please?”

“Go ahead, kiddo,” spoke the human the kittens thought was sleeping by their mother.

The little girl petted Mercielle lightly. The kitten froze, then relaxed under the child’s soothing touch.

“I want this stripy orange one,” she said softly, as she continued to stroke the kitten.

One of Cleocatra’s humans finally spoke. “The little female is perfect. Pick her up, just like I showed you.”

Mercielle allowed herself to be picked up. The little girl beamed.

“I like this one better that that naughty black one. Black cats are bad luck anyways,” the girl said as she cuddled Mercielle.

Marlee said quietly, still with her eyes closed, “That’s superstitious nonsense.”

Scatflipza, the only black kitten of the litter, perked up. She went face to face with the young woman and looked back at her mother for approval. Cleocatra nodded.

“Good-bye, Mama.”

The kitten boldly touched noses with the human and said, “Hello.”

Slowly, the human’s eyes opened. Brown eyes locked onto green.

“Well, that’s weird, Marlee. That little black cat picked you,” chuckled one of Cleocatra’s humans.

“Ha! Weird’s my middle name,” said Marlee as the kitten rubbed against her cheek.

“I really hate landings!” Michelle exclaimed, clenching the armrest tightly.

“You shouldn’t worry. Flying is the safest form of travel. Of course, there have been quite a few airplanes that have crashed lately,” Melvin said wickedly. He never passed up a chance to taunt his older sister.

“Shut up, you little jerk! I hope you empty the contents of your stomach all over the runway,” she yelled at her brother.

The other passengers either laughed or groaned at this comment. Their mother gave them both warning looks and they quieted.

“Quit being so dramatic. We’re in England now! Isn’t this exciting?” Marlee asked excitedly.

Scatflipza awoke to the jostling of the plane landing. She stretched herself and peered out of the carrier. ‘At last! Back on firm ground. If cats were meant to fly, they’d have wings.’
