New In Town
by Roalee

The sun broke through the clouds and its rays seemed to focus on a sleeping black kitten. The kitten opened her eyes and blinked sleepily. Her pearly fangs flashed as she yawned hugely.

“Frankie, Frankie cat, where you at?”

The kitten’s ears perked at her human’s voice. She stretched. When she was done, she trotted to the kitchen to find something to eat. She caught sight of her human, Marlee, and proceeded to rub up against her bare ankles. With her tail held high, she greeted Marlee.

“Good morning,” she meowed.

Marlee smiled and picked up the little kitten. She carried her over to the cabinets to pick out something to eat.

“Okay, Frankie. What will be on the menu today?”

Marlee touched the cans one bye one until the kitten meowed, “Stop.” Marlee looked at the can.

“Tuna. Good choice.”

The kitten was set down on the floor. She groomed while she waited for the food to be prepared. As she started to lick her paw, she was thinking to herself. ‘I wonder if Marlee understands what I’m saying or if I just have her properly trained.’ She decided it had to be training because Marlee usually had to guess at what she wanted.

“Okay, Frankie, there you go.” Marlee set the kitten’s dish beside her water bowl, then went back to her paper. She grinned suddenly.

“I almost forgot. Today’s the day you get your license. You’ll be able to use the cat door freely after that.”

“Frankenstein, hold still!”

Marlee struggled with the squirming kitten as she buckled the black colored collar around her neck. Then she tied the kitten’s red bow back around her neck, covering up the collar. The little black kitten shook herself, causing her new license tags to jingle. Marlee scratched her behind the ears.

“Go ahead, Frankie. You can go outside if you like,” Marlee urged.

She was disappointed when the kitten yawned and went to a patch of sunlight and slept.

“Okay, now I’m ready to go out.”

The black kitten wiggled her pink nose as she pushed open the cat door. She looked around and took in her new environment. She closed her eyes and inhaled deeply to get used to the scents. Opening her eyes again, the kitten leapt from the porch steps and trotted down the walkway, past the large tree in the yard and to the sidewalk beyond the gate entrance. She gazed around, unimpressed.

“Well, England seems to be as boring as America,” she yawned. “At least I’m allowed outside now.”

“Borin’ is it?” queried a deep sounding British accented voice. “’Ow would you know? You ‘ave onla been ‘ere a few days.”

The small black kitten looked around for the source of the voice and finally caught sight of a bi-colored tom sitting in the tree in the yard. Her first reaction was to be angry at the tom for his trespassing.

“Hey! You can’t be there. That’s on my property,” she yelled at him.

The tom gave her an incredulous look. He jumped out of the tree and onto the top of the high wall that surrounded the house. He looked down at the kitten in amusement.

“Yer a brave bit o’ fluff to be sayin’ such thin’s.”

The kitten’s tail bristled in indignation. She rotated her ears and snapped, “And you’re still on my property.”

The tom flicked his ears in surprise and jumped down to the sidewalk. He gazed at the small black kitten through the gateway.

“Is this betta?” he asked with a laugh.

She just bared her fangs and hissed, “Yeah, now get out of here, bub!”

She trembled in fear despite her fierce stance. The tom wasn’t that much older or larger than her, but she had never met any other felines besides her family. The tom noticed her discomfort.

“I believe we ‘ave got’en off on tha wrong paw,” he said in a friendly tone. “Me name is Tumblebrutus.”

The black kitten relaxed slightly.

“My name is Scatflipza and I am related to Cat Morgan of the Jellicle Tribe,” she said automatically, just as her mother told her to do if any cat greeted her.

Tumblebrutus’ eyes widened. “Wot!? Di’ you say tha Jellicle Tribe?”

Scatflipza frowned at him. She realized he was friendly but she was still wary. Trying not to be obvious, she edged back further into the yard.

“Yeah, that’s what I said. You wanna make something of it?” she challenged as soon as she felt she was far enough away from him.

Tumblebrutus laughed good-naturedly and shook his head. “I want you ta come back wi’ me to tha Junkyard.”

“I am sorry. I cannot do that,” she said firmly. She raced onto the porch and called back to the tom who gazed at her from the sidewalk. “Nice meeting you, Tumblebrutus.”

Scatflipza jumped through her cat door and took a deep breath as she landed on the floor. She skidded slightly on the smooth floor and looked around. She ran straight for Marlee.

“Marlee, Marlee!” she meowed loudly as she ran towards Marlee who was sitting on an armchair. The young woman looked up from the book she was reading and uncurled her legs from under her. She put down her book and bent down to pick up Scatflipza.

“Frankie? Why are you meowing so loudly?” Marlee asked as the black kitten settled on her lap.

Scatflipza sighed and curled on Marlee’s lap, disgusted with herself. She couldn’t believe how she had acted in front of that tom. The whole time Tumblebrutus had been perfectly friendly, but she had let her fear cause her to be overly defensive.

“Oh no, Frankie. We’re not going to let a beautiful day like this go to waste,” Marlee said as she gathered the kitten in her arms.

Marlee opened the front door and stepped outside into the sun. She carried Scatflipza into the yard and caught sight of Tumblebrutus sunning himself on the sidewalk. She gasped, afraid that he was hurt.

“Oh! Well, the cat’s not hurt after all,” she said as Tumblebrutus lifted his head and scrambled to his feet at the sight of the human.

Scatflipza giggled at his look of surprise. She wiggled in Marlee’s arms so she could be put down. She was surprised when Marlee sat down cross-legged on the walkway and then let her go. She leaned against one of Marlee’s legs and looked at Tumblebrutus.

“Hey, I thought I told you to get out of here,” Scatflipza said with shy smile. “I’m sorry about earlier. I was kinda scared of you.”

“Ah, I thought it woz somethin’ li’ tha’. I di’ not mean ta scare you. Oo’s yer friend?” he asked as he walked up to the human.

Marlee held out her hand, palm up, for Tumblebrutus to sniff. She giggled as his whiskers tickled her.

“She’s mine, so don’t even think of rubbing your scent on her,” Scatflipza warned.

The tom nodded solemnly. He gave Marlee’s hand a friendly lick and meowed, “Nice ta meet you.”

Marlee smiled widely. She scratched Scatflipza behind her left ear, just where she liked it. The black kitten purred contentedly.

“Oh, cat. Are you here to visit Frankie? I’ll go get some snacks,” Marlee said as she suddenly stood up.

Scatflipza looked at Tumblebrutus. She grinned and raised an eyebrow. “So...?”

“Coo, she’s quite a bird,” he breathed as Marlee went inside.

“Is that supposed to be a compliment?”

Tumblebrutus looked at the young queen quizzically.

“Course, it is.” He grinned as the young woman came out with a dish of crunchy snacks. Even before she set it down, he had his face in the food

“Thee’s absholutely luffly,” he said with his mouth full.
