In the Pricklepear Saloon
"Hey Sassy," Bomb greeted the klutzy brown cat with gold stripes. "What can I get for you?" Mungojerrie rode into town to get his weekly supplies from the general store and decided to stop into the saloon to get a quick drink. He walked in, sat down at a corner table, took off his hat, and waited to be served. "Oh just some prickleypear juice," Sassy answered. "Coming right up." Bomb served her friend then walked back to the table Mungojerrie was sitting at. "Hey Jer. What can I get for you?" "Hi Bomb, I'll just have a whiskey. I can't stay too long." Bomb grinned and said "Only if you're over 18." Mungojerrie glared at her. He was not in the mood for this, "Bomb you know very well how old I am." "All right, all right. Just teasing. I'll be right back." Bomb went back to the bar area and got the drink. Rumpleteazer walked into the saloon and looked around, seeing Mungojerrie she walked over and had a seat next to him "Hey there," she said. Mungojerrie looked up at the voice and smiled, "Hi." He stood up to pull out a chair for her, "You wanna sit down?" He was thinking of the cattle ranch he owned several miles out of town as he said that. Teazer nodded "Thank yas" She said as she sat down next to Jer. Mungojerrie smiled as Rumpleteazer sat down. He hadn't expected to see her today being he was so busy at the ranch, but this was an unexpected surprise. "Do you want anything to drink?" He was almost finished with his but he probably had time for one more before he had to get back to work. "No Thank Ya" Teazer replied with a smile "Wot are you up to today?" "Nothing much, just work as usual. I came into town to pick up my weekly supplies and to meet with someone about selling some of my stock. Nothing major. What about you?" Teazer nodded "Well, I've just been riding my horse through town, she shrugged "Not too busy....." "Do you wanna come to my meeting with me, perhaps your pretty face will help me get more money out of the guy." Teazer smiled "Sure hun, I'd love ta!"
Etcetera slowly got off of the train in the new town. This was the first time she had been away from home and she was very far from everything she knew back East. She clutched her valise and looked around. There was supposed to be a small boarding house somewhere but she didn't see it at the moment. Etcetera had just received her teaching certificate and had taken the first job that was offered to her, teaching in a small western one room school house. She hoped shed make a good teacher. She sighed and sat down on a bench to collect her thoughts. "Oh, goodness me," Griddlebone said as Skimbleshanks helped her to get off the train without falling on her many valises. "That was quite a ride!" Skimbleshanks tipped his hat pleasantly to Griddlebone, "No trouble at all." He climbed back up into the doorway to the train. "All aboard!" he called, and started to load the passengers for the next trip. "Oh, hello, dear," Griddlebone said, spying Etcetera sitting by herself on the bench, and bustling over to her. Etcetera glanced up at the sound of the voice. "Hello," she said hesitantly. Her father told her to not trust anyone until she got to know them but this queen looked friendly enough. She put out her hand, "I'm Etcetera, the new schoolteacher." Griddlebone took Etcetera's hand and shook it daintily. "I'm Griddlebone, newly arrived from England," she said, then went chattering on happily, "I've never been to this part of America before-- it seems a grand adventure, and I'm quite sure it will be very exciting!" "It seems we will be sharing this adventure together then." Etcetera said with a smile. "I've never been out West either. I've lived in the East my whole life." "Well then, let's start, shall we?" She picked up all her valises (there must've been at least 8 of them) and looked around. "Now let me see.. Ah! Yes, of course how silly of me!" Griddlebone walked over to the ticket-seller's booth. *Oh, is that what it's called?* she thought. "Would you be a good tom and send for a cabby, please?" She asked the ticket-seller. Etcetera picked up her one single valise, kind of embarrassed that she only had one, and followed Griddlebone. "I'm supposed to be staying at a boarding house near the school. According to this letter, they have a room ready for me. Where are you staying?" "Oh, I've made reservations for a room at the hotel while I get settled in," Griddlebone said. "Are you waiting for someone to take you there? Or shall we walk?" Etcetera didn't really want to wander into this new and unknown town all by herself, even though they weren't going to the same place, she thought maybe they could walk a bit of the way together. | |
